In late June of 2007, Choir II traveled to France for a two-week performing tour. One of the highlights of that tour was a performance at Omaha Beach in Normandy, site of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. As described in the stunning opening sequences from the recent movie Saving Private Ryan, scores of American soldiers paid the ultimate price while taking part in Operation Overlord, the D-Day landing of Allied troops on Nazi-occupied shores.
The landing at Omaha Beach nearly became a disaster. Landing craft were forced to disgorge their troops hundreds of yards off-shore and soldiers had to wade to shelter in waist-deep waters while being exposed to continuous machine-gun and mortar fire from the overlooking bluffs. By the end of the day, however, the beach was secured and forces moved inland to join up with others on their way to Berlin and eventual victory.
The day the singers visited Omaha Beach it was very windy and cold, with rainshowers every few minutes. It was nonetheless an inspiring moment and one of the highlights of the 2007 tour.
This video clip is a portion of the documentary "Oui, Sing! II" made of that 2007 tour.
