Amahl and the Night Visitors
December 2004
Choirs I, II, and III all participated in this production of Gian-Carlo Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors", an Opera written for the then-new medium of television in 1951.  It was performed for the first time on Christmas Eve of that year on NBC and was directed by the composer himself.  It was so widely praised that it became a tradition, running on Christmas Eve for the next thirteen years, and was shown regularly during the Christmas season for many years afterwards.  It is considered to be one of the most frequently-performed operas of the 20th century.

Particularly noteworthy in this performance is the use of a "Shepherd's Chorus" which bursts into song in the back of the hall before moving to the stage to join with the principal cast.

In this clip, the three Wise Men have arrived at the home of Amahl and his mother.  She tells them they have little food, and sends Amahl out to the neighboring shepherds to urge them to bring something for the Wise Men to eat.  The shepherds arrive from the back of the audience and make their way to the stage, where they present their gifts and perform dances.

Choirs I, II, and III all took part in this portion of the opera.  The youngest children were paired up with the older high-school-aged youth of Choir III.  The surround-sound DVD of this particular production captures the excitement of the shepherds calling from the back of the audience as this scene begins.
